A Pieced Backing and Borders

Above is a not so good picture of the backing that I pieced for the quilt that I spoke about in my last post.  I pieced the backing using new fabric, extra blocks from the children's prints used in the front center of the quilts, and leftover strips from the baby quilt that I made for this little girl.

After creating this crazy looking backing I sandwiched the backing, the batting, and the center of the quilt with the quilt center being centered on the batting.  I then used a serpentine stitch and stitched down all of the seam lines.  This was the easy way to do the quilting.
It worked well but was a bit bulky to handle.

I then added the first border using the same pink that I used in the backing.

The quilt has a total of three borders that are added in a "Flip and Sew" or a "Quilt As You Go" method.  The border is sewn in place through all three layers of the quilt thus making a line of quilting and sewing on the border all at once.

The second border is a narrow pieced border made up of fabrics used in the center of the quilt.

This border was sewn in place the same manner at the first border.  The quilt itself would be nothing without this pieced border.
I used some prints from the first quilt that I made for this little girl plus prints from the blocks in the center of the quilt.
I do have part of the third border in place but not enough to show today.

I will have to take a bit of a break for some life issues that always seem to get in the way.

Have a super great sewing and quilting day.
