A Little Bit of Something New

The first Thursday of each month I go to a Redwork group.  We are just a group of about 25 ladies who meet once a month to share a common interest in Redwork and other needlework.  We have show and tell along with refreshments and a short program.

This past Thursday our program was on Origami.  Why Origami you ask?  We have the honor of having two sweet and wonderful ladies from Japan in our group.  For the month of May they gave a program on Origami.  These lovely ladies showed us how to make Origami Cranes based on the story of Sadako Sasaki.

This beautiful blue crane was made by one of the Japanese ladies.

This is my not so beautiful and somewhat lopsided crane.

The ladies share some Japanese treats.  I am showing the wrappers only the contents were gobbled up.  I could not wait to taste these.  These were really, really good.
The first treat was Dorayaki made with two pancake shaped sponge cakes and a sweet red bean paste.  The second was a Morinaga Milk Caramel which had a lightly sweet taste.

The ladies also made everyone a paper representation of the Japanese Kabuto helmet.  This comes from Japanese history and is now part of the Children's Day Festival held each year on the fifth day of the fifth month (May 5).

It was a fun meeting and I really enjoyed learning a bit more about our members from Japan and their customs and traditions.

Let me apologize now if I have made any errors in my post.  I hope you enjoy learning a bit about Japan as much as I did.

Have a super great day.

  1. hmmm....someone took off with my caramel... think the SON got it... He wouldn't even try the other as it was green... he probably thought it was full of veggies.

  2. Such a wonderful post about our Redwork club program last Thursday. We are fortunate to have such talented ladies in our group. Folding cranes can become addicting.
